The finale of “Somebody Somewhere” isn’t how Bridget Everett wanted the show to end

In the final minutes of Sunday’s series finale of HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere,” Sam (Bridget Everett) celebrates her personal growth over three seasons by singing Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.”

The poppy power ballad expresses the belief that life is about the journey and not a destination. “It’s not about how fast I get there, it’s not about what’s waiting on the other side,” Sam sings to her friends at the bar where she works. “It’s the climb.”

“Over the last two seasons, Sam has learned from her friends and Joel has nurtured her and the community around her,” Everett said in an interview. “Season 3 for her is about putting those lessons into practice, pushing through them when it hurts — especially when it hurts — persevering through them and moving on and trying to live a bigger, fuller, brighter life .”

The appearance in the finale is the perfect throwback to the show’s 2022 premiere, when Sam reacquainted himself with Joel (Jeff Hiller), a member of her high school show choir who she just couldn’t place. Still, Joel adored her: “I used to love watching you sing,” he told Sam in the first episode. “You were so happy that it entered me. Nothing made me happy in high school, and this made me so happy.”

Sam’s singing in the finale evokes the same joy, and those who have watched the series’ 21 episodes will recognize how far Sam has come. When viewers first met her, she was mourning her sister, who had died six months earlier, and struggling to find her place in Manhattan, Kansas. (Everett’s hometown is the setting for the semi-autobiographical series.) Sam had returned to care for her sister, who was battling cancer.

“I feel really good,” Sam tells her friends from the bar stage in Sunday’s episode. “And I thought that was reason enough to ask all of my favorite people to be here with me today. I want you to know how much I love you. I really do. … Cheers to us and to life.”

The finale brings the characters full circle, which is why it’s surprising that Everett and the cast didn’t know the episode would be their last. (HBO canceled the series after three seasons.)

“That was my first day on set” for Season 3, says Hiller, 49.

“It was kind of wild,” Everett adds, “because you kind of have an idea of where you want the temperature to be in the scene, but we just rolled the dice and hoped that was good enough.”

An online petition with more than 10,000 signatures calls on HBO to give the Peabody Award-winning series a fourth season, praising the “quiet, compassionate show, a loving community in Middle America, the meaning of chosen family, authentic transsexuals “ features and highlights queer representation and real relationships that survive even the most painful conflict.”

And Everett, 52, is ready for more.

“I never want to say goodbye to these characters,” she says. “I hope it’s just a goodbye for now. I was telling someone earlier that yesterday, or whatever day, I was out taking my steps and I thought of a scene between Sam and Joel that they might be in right now and a Set of circumstances that I have in mind. It just feels like I’m right back at it.”

Everett is very open about what she imagines for the characters, but she knows “exactly how it should end.”

Hiller would also work to revive the characters. In the finale, philanthropist Joel decides to return to his church and finds the courage to share his decision with his partner Brad (Tim Bagley).

“But let’s just say, if we could make a movie or something, Joel wouldn’t be living in London and making phone calls,” he says, referring to Kim Cattrall’s brief cameo “And Just Like That…”. a public feud with star Sarah Jessica Parker. “I’ll be there.”

Hiller ultimately describes the series as “a platonic romantic comedy.” Having Sam without Joel would make just as much sense as having a peanut butter sandwich without jelly.

Everett’s best moment in the finale is when Joel declares himself to Sam: “My life is so much better because of you,” he tells her.

“It feels like the point of the show,” Everett says. Sam “needs someone like Joel who is indisputable and not willing to give up on her.”

Because of Joel’s unconditional love and a strengthened relationship with her sister Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison), a more confident Sam feels emboldened to pursue a romance with a man named Island (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson).

Sam initially said that Iceland blew her off after their first date when she actually ghosted him because she was afraid of being rejected. After Tricia encourages Sam to try it out, she invites Island to the bar, where he is mesmerized by her performance. “That was incredible,” he tells her before Sam falls onto his shoulder and the credits roll.
