The former Michigan football quarterback is in the transfer portal again

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A former starting quarterback for Michigan football has entered the transfer portal again.

Cade McNamara helped lead Michigan to a Big Ten championship in 2021, breaking an 18-year losing streak for the program. These Wolverines also broke a decade-long losing streak against rival Ohio State.

Michigan hasn’t lost to the Buckeyes since then and most recently won its fourth straight over the weekend as a 20-point underdog.

But McNamara’s relationship with the program soured in 2022 when he lost a competition with JJ McCarthy for his old job. It was the right decision for the Wolverines, who went 28-1 in 2022 and 2023 and won the national championship.

Meanwhile, McNamara spent the last two years at Iowa, where he threw for 1,522 yards and 10 touchdowns in 13 games.

But injuries and inconsistency marred part of McNamara’s tenure at Iowa, and on Wednesday he announced he would look for a third school this offseason.

Here’s something he posted on Instagram:

My last two years at the University of Iowa have been an incredible journey. Despite so many ups and downs, I couldn’t be more grateful for the amazing people and experiences I’ve had here. I am deeply grateful for the relationships I have built with my teammates, coaches and newfound friends.

I would like to specifically thank Coach Ferentz, Coach Lester and the entire Iowa Football team for their unwavering support and wisdom. I will truly miss this program and this state, and they will always hold a special place in my heart.

With that said, I enter the transfer portal. I’m looking forward to this offseason, being the healthiest I’ve been in years, and continuing to grow as a player, leader and person. I’m excited to see where God takes my soccer journey next.

Now and forever, Go Hawks!

McNamara has one year of eligibility remaining at Michigan starting in 2022 thanks to a COVID season and a medical redshirt.
