NEW YORK — A manhunt is underway in New York for the gunman who fired Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare According to police reports, there was apparently a targeted attack on Wednesday morning.

ThompsonThe 50-year-old was shot once in the chest about 6:45 a.m. outside the Hilton Midtown Hotel on Sixth Avenue near West 54th Street in New York City, NYPD sources said. According to NYPD sources, Thompson was not a guest at the Hilton. He was staying at another hotel and was on his way to the Hilton for a corporate event when he was attacked.

A spokesperson for UnitedHealthcare told CBS News that the shooting occurred during the company’s investor conference.

What we know about the CEO shooting suspect

The suspect has not been identified. New York Police Department sources described him to CBS News as a white male wearing a jacket, a black face mask and black and white sneakers. The man was also carrying a gray backpack.

He was last seen fleeing eastbound on 6th Avenue. Police are trying to track him down through video footage, NYPD sources said.

Police are still reviewing surveillance images and a law enforcement source told CBS News that investigators have video of the shooting.

The suspect did not rob Thompson, police said, and the attack appeared to be targeted. UnitedHealthcare investigators and security officials are combing through files looking for a possible motive, possible past threats and disgruntled or recently fired employees, a law enforcement source said.

Police provide information about the current status of the incident

Newly sworn in police commissioner Jessica TableChief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey and Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny will provide an update on the shooting at 11:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, the NYPD said.
