The initial fighting worsened into an overall disaster for West Virginia

Early on, West Virginia didn’t appear to have a fastball. Nevertheless, they continued to fight until things went completely downhill.

“All we know is that we had to put out a fire. There were a few times, I think it was a turnover on downs, we went out, sudden changes, so something we practice a lot,” West Virginia linebacker Trey Lathan said.

On WVU’s first possession, the Mountaineers marched down the field but were stopped on fourth down. Texas Tech entered the red zone and responded with a field goal. WVU tied that field goal right away before the Mountaineers scored again on a Red Raiders shot into the red zone.

“We just played disciplined, did our 1/11 and that just helped us,” Lathan said of WVU’s early success.

West Virginia’s offense soon stalled, and that led to a first half that ended with the Red Raiders leading 35-3.

“They had good answers for us on third downs, with some sim pressure that looked like I didn’t push the run in the right direction. They just had good answers on third down,” West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene said.

Greene turned the ball over twice in the final 2:40 of the first half, which directly led to Texas Tech’s score.

“They kind of played their coverage a little bit differently than what they showed on tape. “Especially with their cover-two stuff, really kind of a flat-foot game, the safety-flat-foot kind of game, he didn’t get too excited,” Greene said.

Tahj Brooks took over towards the end of the first half. Brooks finished with 188 yards and three scores.

“Tahj Brooks is more disciplined, he waits for his O-line and just hits the hole when he needs to hit it,” Lathan said.

Now West Virginia will wait and see where they will play their bowl game. Until then, they will rest and not let this one game define their season.

“I just want to play one more game with the guys in this locker room,” Greene said.
