The map of Texas shows counties that will freeze over during a cold snap

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued two freeze warnings for parts of Texas as bitter temperatures set in, as well as several additional gusty weather warnings later this week.

Texans across the state can expect cold temperatures Tuesday and throughout the evening, especially in the South.

“It will be much colder in south Texas tonight, with subfreezing temperatures in areas from La Salle to Victoria,” the NWS in Corpus Christi said on Facebook. “Closer to the coast temperatures will drop to the low to mid 40s. Wind chills will be near or below freezing across the region.”

A freeze watch is currently active for Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Houston, Madison, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Trinity, Walker and Washington counties in Central Texas, where temperatures are expected to drop to as low as 30 degrees F Tuesday through Tuesday evening Wednesday morning.

Elsewhere in the state along the U.S.-Mexico border, low temperatures of 27 Fahrenheit are expected in the Chisos Basin and Presidio Valley, as well as Brewster and Terrell counties. The watch is in effect until Wednesday evening, with frost and frost forecast.

Locals in both areas are urged to bring their pets indoors or ensure they have suitable warm, dry shelter for the cold weather, and to take action now to protect vulnerable plants from the cold. Outdoor faucets should either be covered or set to drip slowly to prevent pipes from freezing.

Other types of clues also exist in parts of the Lone Star State. Dense fog warnings are currently in effect along the Gulf Coast from Galveston to Corpus Christi. Residents are being warned of dangerous driving conditions due to poor visibility.

Wind advisories are also active throughout Thursday afternoon into Wednesday morning across South Texas in Cameron, Willacy and Kenedy counties.

“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects,” the NWS warned. “Branches could be downed and some power outages may occur.” Motorists are urged to exercise caution on the road as “such strong winds can make driving difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles.”

A storm warning is in effect along the entire Texas Gulf Coast and into Louisiana. On Tuesday, “a strong cold front will push off the coast of Texas and then move rapidly southeastward across the basin,” which is expected to exit the region Wednesday evening, the warning said.

“Behind the front, strong to gale-force winds and rapidly building swells are expected throughout Tuesday into Wednesday and Thursday.”
