The New England Patriots expect Jerod Mayo to return as head coach in 2025

The New England Patriots are expected to retain Jerod Mayo as head coach for the 2025 season, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

Mayo struggled in his first season as head coach with the Patriots. It even got to the point where some wondered if Robert Kraft would consider a move after just one season.

However, Mayo’s future seems secure at least for 2025.

“Let’s focus on Patriots coach Jarod Mayo, obviously the Patriots are playing today,” Rapoport began. “We saw a really strong performance from the Patriots last week that brought the Buffalo Bills to the brink. Here’s my understanding of where Drought Mayo stands with the Patriots. They began the season knowing and believing that he would be their leader in the future. They also knew that as a team, just because of the lack of talent, they knew it would take some time.

“As far as I know, I reported this with Tom on nfl.com this morning. Nothing helped the Patriots get away. Obviously, there have been challenges with the Patriots this season. There is no doubt about that. There may be some personnel changes in focus, perhaps with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. We’ll see where they go with this decision. But from what I understand, Jarod Mayo is going into this offseason: Safe guys.”

New England is 3-12 in Mayo’s first year and doesn’t have much to show for it. However, the Patriots could have something in the first round if they select Drake Maye as their QB.

Now it’s about surrounding him with protection and talent. They will face the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET.

While Mayo has been criticized, the players have staunchly defended him. Mayo was even asked about what led to this game: “Look, I understand the question. That’s a great question,” Mayo said. “For me personally, this is more of a kind of food for thought after the season. I appreciate the players and want to go out there and play hard every day. I know recording is sometimes difficult. If your record is to go out here and play a down-for-down basis, then that’s what those guys did.”
