The Patriots activated Caedan Wallace and placed Marcus Jones on injured reserve

The Patriots bolstered their offensive tackles in the final two games of the season on Friday afternoon, naming rookie Caedan Wallace to the 53-man roster.

Additionally, the Patriots placed cornerback/punt returner Marcus Jones on injured reserve and elevated wide receiver Alex Erickson and linebacker Monty Rice from the practice squad to the active roster for the second straight year.

Wallace, a 6-foot-5-inch, 314-pound player, was a third-round pick last spring who played four games before going on IR because of an ankle injury he suffered in October. Wallace, who saw action at left tackle earlier in the season after a standout career at right tackle at Penn State, could be in jeopardy against the Chargers on Saturday as right tackle Demontrey Jacobs struggled on defense.

Jones, who was off and on with a hip injury, did not play against the Bills last week. His absence likely means New England’s younger corners, including Alex Austin and Isaiah Bolden, will take on more roles. Jones’ role as punt returner was expected to be taken over by Erickson, who stepped in as the primary punt returner against the Bills.

The 32-year-old Erickson, an eight-season veteran, was signed to the practice squad on Dec. 18. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound player played in 108 regular-season games with 17 starts and caught 112 balls for 1,373 yards with two touchdowns. He has also returned 162 punts for 1,303 yards and 110 kickoffs for 2,729 yards.
