New York Rangers right winger Matt Rempe received a game-misconduct penalty for elbowing Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen.

About seven minutes into the third period, the Rangers had a 2-1 lead over the Stars. At that moment, Rempe ran toward the back of Heiskanen, who threw the puck out of the Dallas defensive zone.

Rempe elbowed Heiskanen from behind. Heiskanen stood up slowly. He had to miss about six minutes of play before returning for four more shifts.

After the hit, Stars center Roope Hintz rushed to Rempe to defend his long-time teammate. Both were given two-minute minor roughing exercises. Rempe also received a five-minute major penalty for elbowing and a 10-minute game misconduct penalty and finished his night with 5:32 of ice time and five goals.

Despite Rempe’s sending off, the Rangers converted the big penalty and ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Stars.

“I thought he had a big impact on the game,” Rangers coach Peter Laviolette told reporters afterward. “I would like to stay away from the five-minute major, but he is doing his best to hit bodies and make a difference in the game. Our guys really committed to it at the end.”

This is the Rangers enforcer’s fourth shutout in 22 career NHL games. Most recently, he received a game misconduct on April 3 for participating in the line brawl between the Rangers and the New Jersey Devils. That came a few weeks after Rempe received a major penalty and eventual four-game suspension on March 11 for elbowing Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler. And on February 22nd against New Jersey, Rempe again received a match penalty for a hit on Nathan Bastian.

This was Rempe’s first game for the Rangers since November 25 against the St. Louis Blues. The Rangers called him up from the AHL, where he recorded three goals, five points and 22 penalty minutes in 18 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack.

So far this season, the 22-year-old has played in five games in the NHL, recording one shot and 24 penalty minutes. Last season, he racked up 71 penalty minutes as well as one goal and one assist in 17 games.

Rempe is averaging 6:15 of ice time this season and 5:46 in his career.
