The Rangers’ Rempe was sent off for elbowing the Stars’ Heiskanen

Most NHL players go their entire career without being sent off four times. Matt Rempe reached this mark in just 22 games.

The young New York Rangers forward added his fourth career ejection Friday night when he received a game-misconduct penalty for elbowing Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen in the third period.

Rempe smashed Heiskanen from behind, his elbow hitting the Stars defender in the head area. The 22-year-old Rempe was assessed a five-minute major and eliminated from the competition.

This ended an eventful evening for Rempe, who finished the game with five goals and 17 penalty minutes in just 5:27 minutes of ice time.

Rempe played his first game for the big club since November 25 as the struggling Rangers hoped he could breathe some life into their lineup. Ejection probably wasn’t what they had in mind.

Luckily, the Rangers were able to end the five-minute run and claim a 3-1 win.

Rempe could face additional disciplinary action for the hit, and it wouldn’t be the first time he’s met with the NHL’s player safety department. Last season, he was suspended four games after being sent off for hitting Jonas Siegenthaler of the New Jersey Devils in the head.

Last season as a rookie, Rempe recorded one goal, one assist and 71 penalty minutes in 17 games.

He has zero points and 24 penalty minutes in five games this season.
