The Juan Soto Sweepstakes has reached and possibly exceeded a historic threshold.

The Red Sox, along with the Mets, Yankees and Blue Jays, are believed to have made an offer in the region of $700 million for Soto New York PostJon Heyman reported.

“An internet sleuth claimed he told someone (the Mets) he was offering $700 million for 15 years. I think it’s safe for all four teams,” Heyman said on a stream for Bleacher Report. “I don’t think this is a shock. I think that’s where we are now.”

At the beginning of the week, The athlete‘s Ken Rosenthal reported that the Red Sox were among five teams that made Soto an offer worth at least $600 million. Late Thursday, a TikTok account believed to be the son of Mets manager Carlos Mendoza claimed that the team had made Soto an offer worth $700 million, or higher, over 15 years would have been better than any other offer reported to date.

However, as the Soto sweepstakes heats up, some insiders expect offers to approach and possibly exceed the $700 million mark. That number represents a big threshold for many reasons. Shohei Ohtani’s record 10-year contract with the Dodgers last offseason was worth exactly $700 million. Exceeding that mark would give Soto the largest contract in North American sports history.

Soto’s contract term is expected to be longer than Ohtani’s. According to Heyman, it is “likely” that Soto will receive a 15-year contract. Additionally, Heyman believes Soto will break Ohtani’s record if he doesn’t sign with the Dodgers, who he believes are a bit behind in the hunt for the star outfielder.

“I think he’s going to set a record, unless he happens to say – at this point, the Dodgers are probably dead last here – ‘You know what?’ I’m not so interested in an extra $30, $40, $50, $60 million. It’s not a big deal for me, I want to be on the best team. “So as far as I know, they’re still there.”

Heyman also noted that the Red Sox, Mets, Yankees and Blue Jays are “on par” in terms of their offers at this point.

“I suspect all four teams are now in the $700 million range,” Heyman said. “Some of them maybe a little over, some a little under.”

The Red Sox could be positioning themselves to stand out from the crowd. They have expressed interest in having another meeting with Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, where they would find a price that would get a deal done. The Boston GlobeAlex Speier reported on Thursday. It is reportedly unknown whether this wish was fulfilled.

According to Heyman, teams have continued to make last-minute offers to Soto as the competition is expected to end soon.

“I think we look at Saturday as a possibility, Sunday as a possibility,” Heyman said of Soto making his decision. “Monday, I’m not sure at this point if it will last until Monday. I think we’re getting pretty close to a solution.”
