The Red Wings fall to the Avalanche and lose their fifth game in a row 1-2

The top line breathed some life into the Detroit Red Wings, but it wasn’t enough of a revitalization measure.

The Wings returned to Little Caesars Arena on Saturday after two road games and took on another pair next week against the Colorado Avalanche. Other opponent; Same result: a 2-1 defeat tonight.

It was the fifth straight game the Wings (10-13-2) lost by one goal and the seventh straight loss by one goal. They have only picked up two points in their last five games.

The Wings had given up an even score and a power play goal to the Avalanche when Lucas Raymond scored his 10th goal of the season to give the Wings a one-goal lead early in the third period.

However, they found it difficult to carry the momentum into the third period as they fired one shot at Alexandar Georgiev in the first ten minutes of the period, while Ville Husso stopped six shots in that span. Husso was pulled with 2:30 to play for the extra attacker.

Falling back

It had been a pretty even game when the Avs took the lead. Samuel Girard fired a cross-ice pass that Valeri Nichuskin picked up and ran into the Detroit zone, where he fired a shot from the top of the right circle.

Ben Chiarot blocked that attempt, but Nichuskin recovered his own rebound, took it from backhand to forehand and fired a shot from the slot that past Jeff Petry and Husso and into Detroit’s net at 10:48 of the first period landed.

Raymond nets No. 10

After a rare 5-on-5 lethal penalty game in Ottawa, the Wings were back in their vulnerable mood with a teammate in the box. Vladimir Tarasenko had to make a catch at 2:16 of the second period, and within half a minute Cale Makar gave the Avalanche a 2-0 lead with a shot through traffic.

The Wings were able to cut that lead in half when Raymond blocked Dylan Larkin’s shot at 18:13, a huge swing just as the half was coming to an end. It was Raymond’s eighth goal in his last nine games.

Cossa on the horizon?

The game marked the third straight start and fourth consecutive appearance for Husso, who has been the go-to man between the posts since Cam Talbot suffered a lower-body injury in the Dec. 1 game against Vancouver. Both he and Alex Lyon (also lower body) are out at least until Monday, when the Wings play the Sabers in Buffalo.

Given that neither has practiced for a week or more, one can be optimistic that the Wings will be ready come December 12th when they are in Philadelphia. That could lead to the Wings giving Sebastian Cossa, their 2021 first-round pick, his first career NHL start on Monday to avoid overloading Husso.
