The SEC Championship is Georgia versus Texas

The SEC Championship is Georgia versus Texas

Georgia now knows its opponent for Saturday’s SEC Championship game.

The Bulldogs will face Texas, which defeated Texas A&M 17-7, on Saturday night in College Station.

Kick-off in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium is at 4 p.m. (ABC).

Saturday’s contest will be the second game between the Bulldogs (10-2) and Longhorns (11-1), with Georgia handing Texas its only loss, 30-15, on Oct. 19 in Austin.

Texas was the top-ranked team in the country when the Bulldogs picked up the win, holding the Longhorns to 279 total yards.

The Bulldogs (10-2) are no strangers to Atlanta and Mercedes-Benz Stadium and will be playing their second game at the facility this season after opening the year with a 34-3 win over Clemson.

Georgia also marks its fourth consecutive appearance in the SEC Championship Game. The only school to have a longer winning streak was Florida, appearing in the first five games from 1992 to 1996.

With a win, the Bulldogs will be crowned SEC champions and receive a bye to the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff.

Lose and Georgia would still be in the picture for an at-large spot, although there would still be concerns as Alabama (9-3) and Ole Miss (9-3) each have wins over the Bulldogs.

However, after defeating Georgia Tech in eight overtimes on Friday night, a 10-3 Georgia team that advanced to the SEC Championship would seemingly stay ahead and still make the 12-team field.

But first things first.

Bulldog head coach Kirby Smart has made no secret that the SEC Championship is a big deal.

Georgia last won the SEC championship in 2022, defeating LSU before winning the second of two straight national championships.

He’d like to do it again before setting out to win the program’s third national title in four years.
