A fourth Sonic the Hedgehog film is on the way, with a release date of spring 2027.

As Variety reports, Paramount is currently gearing up for a new film as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters this weekend.

Fans have already speculated about what new characters will be introduced in the third film’s closing credits, which will undoubtedly be the focus of the inevitable fourth film.

The first two Sonic the Hedgehog films grossed a combined $725.2 million at the worldwide box office, with the third film expected to top the box office this holiday season.

Details about Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s plot are apparently being kept under wraps at the moment, so it’s unclear who from the cast will be returning.

Jeff Fowler directed all three Sonic films, with Ben Schwartz as the voice of the titular Blue Blur and Jim Carrey as the antagonist Dr. Robotnik.

The third film introduces Shadow the Hedgehog from the game Sonic Adventure 2, voiced here by Keanu Reeves.

“Sega and Paramount are aligning game and film worlds more closely to deliver an authentic Sonic game with added Keanu cool,” I wrote in our Eurogamer film review of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

“Sonic 3 is a resounding success and a fitting end to the Year of the Shadow. Bubbly and confident, it combines the appeal of broader pop culture with the authenticity of the source material, while its flashy action delivers thrills alongside an unbridled sense of cool that’s only heightened by Reeves as Shadow.
