The Spurs make it through to Wembanyama and return on Sunday against the Pelicans

The chances of Spurs ending their previous three-game losing streak on Sunday increased as the team’s medical staff cleared Victor Wembanyama to return to the pitch.

The Spurs upgraded Wembanyama from probable to active for the game against the New Orleans Pelicans after he completed his pregame routine.

The star center had missed the last two games due to lower back pain.

Wembanyama leads the Spurs (12-11) in scoring (23.5 points per game), rebounding (10.4) and blocked shots (an NBA-best 3.4).

The Pelicans are 5-19, including 1-11 on the road.

The Spurs also got back Devin Vassell, who sat out Friday night’s 140-113 loss to Sacramento because of his injury following offseason foot surgery.

Wembanyama should have an immediate, welcome impact on Spurs’ defense. Their last two opponents have set season highs against the Spurs, with Chicago scoring 139 points on Friday night.

“It will definitely help,” Johnson said of Wembanyama’s return. “It would be silly not to acknowledge that. I do believe we had problems that had nothing to do with Victor or where he might be. We have five guys to guard on the court, so hopefully we can get in there in a few different ways, but it would be nice to bring someone of his caliber back.”
