The Steelers expect to use the 91-TD, 6’2 quarterback as a replacement for Russell Wilson

The Steelers expect to use the 91-TD, 6’2 quarterback as a replacement for Russell Wilson

After years of ineptitude at the quarterback position, the 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers have finally found their man in veteran Russell Wilson, who has stabilized the position and proven to be a massive improvement for the offense.

The Steelers actually brought in two signal callers who have done a good job so far, as Justin Fields has weathered the storm brilliantly while Wilson has been sidelined with injury. Although he didn’t play as well as Wilson, Fields was good enough to lead the Steelers to a winning record (4-2) until Wilson returned.

But here’s the thing: Wilson and Fields are free agents in 2025 and aren’t certain to return. Even if Wilson returns as expected, the Steelers may want to start planning for the future since he turns 37 next year.

With that in mind, Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine predicts the Steelers will sign Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Steelers opted for two one-year fixes at quarterback this season. Both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields fell into their laps for practically nothing.

This year they have to make some concrete decisions. At this point, it might be best to bring Wilson back while also using some draft capital to replace his eventual successor.

If they go that route, a prospect like Jaxson Dart would be good. He won’t be one of the first quarterbacks drafted, but he has some interesting tools.

Dart had a strong 2024 season, completing 68.6% of his passes for 3,875 yards and 25 touchdowns with six interceptions. He also showed off his agility by racking up 452 rushing yards and another three touchdowns on the ground.

During his college career, Dart completed 64.9% of his passes for 11,566 yards and 77 touchdowns with 27 interceptions, while on the ground he totaled 1,498 yards and 14 scores.

Here’s more on the Ole Miss standout, according to Bleacher Report’s Dame Parson.

“Jaxson Dart has good physical skills to be an effective starting quarterback. His ability to increase the speed of his passes will translate well across the league. He is more than willing to accept the check below. Dart will take time to learn and adapt to an NFL offensive system.”

Based on Parson’s last sentence, Dart would be in an ideal situation in Pittsburgh as he can sit behind Wilson for a year or two and develop and then eventually take over the reins of the offense once the veteran signal-caller moves on.
