A powerful storm that hit Boston on Wednesday caused flooding that shut down a highway tunnel in the city and knocked out power to tens of thousands of people.

The entrance ramp from Congress Street to Interstate 93 was flooded Wednesday evening, Massachusetts State Police said. Traffic was rerouted and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation sent emergency crews to pump out the water.

NBC10 Boston has reached out to MassDOT for more information.

Videos of cars driving through a flooded tunnel circulated on social media. Police did not provide any information about whether vehicles were stuck in the floodwaters.

According to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, fewer than 9,500 customers were without power around midnight, down from more than 24,000 around 7 p.m.

MBTA Commuter Rail trains that run to South Station also experienced power issues. In Back Bay, a broken overhead wire that supplies power to trains caused significant delays to and from Boston. Adding to the problems was a disabled Amtrak train, according to T.

Additionally, a fallen tree near the Four Corners/Geneva station in Boston caused at least two trains to be canceled on the Fairmount Line, the MBTA said.

Fire officials in Taunton said part of the edge of the roof collapsed on Main Street. The remaining parts were removed by the emergency services so that the wind could not knock it over. Nobody was injured.

The storm was expected to cause local flooding – a flood warning was in effect for parts of central and western Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire until Thursday morning.

According to FlightAware, arriving flights at Boston’s Logan Airport were delayed by an average of more than two hours and two dozen flights were canceled.

Steamship Authority ferries to and from Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard were also canceled, the service said, citing high winds.
