The Sugar Bowl has a huge impact on the future of football in Georgia

The Sugar Bowl game against Notre Dame has huge implications for the future of Georgia football.

The stage is set as the Georgia Bulldogs will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on January 1st and the winner will advance to the semifinal round with their chances of winning a national title still intact. Winning a national title is the most important goal for Georgia right now, and they know better than anyone in recent memory how much a title means to a program. However, the Sugar Bowl itself has significant implications for the future of Georgia’s program.

Starting quarterback Carson Beck is not expected to play, meaning Gunner Stockton will be the leader of the offense. Stockton helped lead Georgia to a win over Texas in the SEC Championship Game, but Georgia fans didn’t see much of him throughout his career. He played for an extended period in the Orange Bowl against Florida State last year, but other than that his game appearances were very limited.

It also means fans and coaches will be able to watch Stockton play at the collegiate level for four quarters for the first time. There are many questions about Stockton’s abilities since he barely took any snaps at Georgia, but many of those will likely be answered against Notre Dame.

That leads to what Georgia will learn about the future of its quarterback room in this game. Stockton was always believed to be the No. 2 guy behind Beck, and that turned out to be true, but it wasn’t entirely set in stone that he would be the man for Georgia in 2025. It seemed like things were gearing up, but there was no clear answer, at least not clear enough, that Beck would be the next man up after Stetson Bennett left for the NFL.

Therefore, it’s likely that after the Sugar Bowl, Georgia will have a much better understanding of the direction of its quarterback room in 2025. Of course, if Stockton leads the Dawgs to another win or even multiple playoff wins, then he will have the job firmly in hand by the spring. But a loss would result in that starting spot being up for grabs next year and potentially even force Georgia to search for another body in the portal.

There’s definitely a chance Georgia loses as well, but confidence in Stockton’s ability to be the team’s starter in the future only grows. You could also say that a Georgia win could raise even more questions. The bottom line, however, is that the Sugar Bowl should provide more clarity on the direction of Georgia’s quarterback room in the near future.
