The transfer of Diego Gómez to Brighton by Inter Miami sets MLS marks

Brighton have agreed to sign 21-year-old Diego Gómez from Inter Miami, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.

The Paraguayan midfielder will complete his move on January 1st.

Brighton did not disclose the transfer fee or contract length for Gómez, who joined Miami in 2023 and helped the MLS club qualify for the playoffs this season. Inter Miami said the transfer fee was a club record and “among the most expensive foreign transfers in Major League Soccer (MLS) history.”

“He is a dynamic midfielder who can contribute goals and assists and we believe his physical profile will be important as he adapts to the challenge of the Premier League,” Brighton technical director David Weir said.

Gómez represented Paraguay at the Paris Olympics this summer.

“He has already made a real impact at both club and international level,” said Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler. “Like all young players who come to us from abroad, he will need a period of adjustment to the Premier League, but I think he can make a big contribution and I look forward to working with him.”

Brighton sit seventh in the Premier League standings and are fighting for Champions League qualification next season.

“I am grateful to Inter Miami for the incredible opportunity to join this fantastic organization and make history with the club,” said Gómez. “I am grateful for the trust the club has placed in me and for everything they have done since joining in July last year to help me develop and make me a better player and person on and off the pitch to make room for it. I will always keep going.” Inter Miami with me in my heart.
