The Warriors fail to catch the Mavs in the high-scoring shootout, 143-133

After both the Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the NBA Cup, the two teams met on Sunday evening in San Francisco instead of Las Vegas for a thrilling shootout.

From the opening tip, Luka Doncic and the Mavericks caught fire. Doncic scored 15 points on 6 of 7 shooting in the first quarter against the Warriors and never looked back. Doncic finished Sunday’s game with 45 points on 16 of 23 shooting from the field, six 3-pointers, 13 assists and 11 rebounds for a fiery triple-double on Sunday.

Along with Doncic, his new teammate and former Golden State shooting guard Klay Thompson cheered on his former team. Thompson scored a season-high 29 points with seven made 3-pointers.

While Doncic, Thompson and Kyrie Irving couldn’t miss, the Warriors continued to wage a back-and-forth offensive battle. Andrew Wiggins scored 29 points while Steph Curry added 26 points and 10 assists against the Mavericks. However, it wasn’t enough for a late comeback.

The Mavericks secured a 143-133 victory over the Warriors, handing Golden State its eighth loss in its last 10 games.

Behind sharp shooting from Doncic, Thompson, Irving, Curry and Wiggins, the Warriors and Mavericks combined for an NBA-record 48 3-pointers. The Warriors made 27 three-pointers while the Mavericks knocked down 21 3-pointers.

The Warriors now have three days off before facing Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night. The Warriors are expected to welcome newcomer Dennis Schroder to the team on Monday before their game against the Grizzlies.
