There will “definitely” be a white Christmas in Boston

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? Maybe you’ll be lucky.

Cold weather is expected to continue in Boston for most of the week, meaning snow could continue Friday, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Caitlyn Mensch.

“Considering how cold it will be… there will definitely be a white Christmas, the chances of that are pretty good,” Mensch said.

“Most areas that had at least more than an inch or even an inch of snow are likely to have snow on the ground by Christmas,” Mensch added.

Massachusetts may even see further light accumulation Monday night into Tuesday morning, Christmas Eve.

“It will be a very fast-moving system that moves through overnight, but there could be some lingering showers in the morning,” Mensch said.

Mensch added that the Boston area will “definitely” be cold enough to see additional snow, but the NWS is not forecasting significant amounts.

The Cape could have a slightly higher chance of precipitation, but due to the possibility of higher temperatures, Mensch said there could be “really wet snow or even a mix of snow in some places.”

The meteorologist predicted an inch or less of snow for many areas, although the chance could be slightly higher northeast of Boston at more than an inch.

Friday’s winter storm caused more than 200 car accidents in Massachusetts, and this holiday week could see a record number of travelers, according to AAA.

There is always a risk of traffic and travel disruptions due to Tuesday’s light accumulation, but Mensch did not expect the event to pose a particularly high risk of major traffic disruptions.

Monday’s temperatures will be slightly higher than Sunday’s bitterly cold temperatures – highs will be in the mid to upper 20s, Mensch said, but temperatures will gradually warm as the week progresses.

“Heading into Tuesday and Wednesday we will see temperatures around 30°C,” Mensch said.
