Thick fog blankets San Diego, delaying more than 100 flights at airport during holiday week – NBC 7 San Diego

Thick fog will again spread from the coast to the valleys Saturday morning, reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less and causing delays for thousands of travelers at San Diego International Airport.

A dense fog warning was in effect until 9am, but at that time there were still numerous pockets of fog in the region, particularly along the coast. Tonight the fog returns and some coastal areas and inland valleys will see cool temperatures around 40 degrees.

Despite fog delays, a steady stream of travelers arrived in SAN on the first day of winter, NBC 7’s Adonis Albright reports.

SAN officials urged travelers — leisure or otherwise — to check with their airlines before heading to Harbor Drive and the airport.

A quick check of the airport’s flight status page, found here, showed more than a hundred flights were delayed or canceled Saturday.

SATURDAY WEATHER

Temperatures in the inland valleys will tend to be about five degrees cooler on Saturday, but that’s still above normal for this time of year. High clouds will also move over our valleys and a deeper marine layer is expected to cover the coast. Coastal temperatures will be near seasonal but cool, in the low 60s.

High surf

A high surf warning is in effect Saturday night through Wednesday morning due to large breaking waves of 6 to 10 feet and some up to 13 feet. There is also a high risk of strong currents, making it dangerous for both surfers and swimmers. The surf could cause minor flooding in low lying areas along the beach, boardwalks and similar parking areas.

FORECAST

Temperatures will rise slightly on Monday, but a cold front sweeping across Southern California on Christmas Eve will drop temperatures to near or below average on Tuesday. In addition to cooling, the cold front may bring light rain showers and gusty winds.

It looks like there will be light rain at this time, with a 20-40% chance of 0.10-0.25 inches of precipitation. The system should move quickly and leave dry weather on Christmas Day.

Dry weather prevails towards the end of the holiday week.

SATURDAY:

  • Coast: morning fog; mostly sunny, mid to low 60s
  • Valleys: morning fog; mostly sunny, mid to low 70s
  • Mountains: mostly sunny, mid to low 60s
  • Desert: mostly sunny – upper 70s
