Thick fog is still causing problems for travelers, with rain returning on Friday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Expect drastic visibility improvements only during parts of Friday.

Your first warning: Patchy fog this afternoon

Dense fog remains widespread, although there is improvement in some parts of the TV9 viewing area. Expect the situation to deteriorate somewhat this evening and overnight with visibility returning to a quarter mile or less. Be extra careful when driving tonight and use dipped headlights.

Your first warning: Rainy and mild tonight through Saturday morning

Scattered showers will begin to develop in eastern Iowa after sunset and will continue throughout the night. Rain will increase from Friday morning and Friday will be a wet day with slow, steady rain. However, thanks to the mild temperatures, all precipitation is in liquid form. Lows will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s tonight and in the mid to upper 40s on Friday. Rain will continue into Friday night while low temperatures will fall into the mid to upper 30s, gradually easing Saturday morning. On Saturday the rain will move north and we will be dry on Saturday night. Highs will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s Saturday and in the low to mid 30s Saturday night

Your first warning: pattern change on the horizon

Looking ahead to next week, the weather situation appears to remain largely calm, with one exception. The unrest lasts Monday and Monday night into Tuesday morning. This could bring a mix of rain, sleet and snow to eastern Iowa. Stay tuned for updates in the coming days as we work out details such as timing, impacts and amounts. At the start of the new year, cooler air is heading our way. This cooldown represents a return to more seasonal conditions, but conditions are not expected to be overly severe at this point.
