This popular chip brand has issued a new recall

Frito-Lay is recalling certain bags of its Lay’s Classic Potato Chips due to concerns that the products may contain milk, which is an allergen.

The company issued the recall on Monday, according to an announcement released Wednesday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The products in question are 13-ounce bags with the following Universal Product Code or UPC: 28400 31041.

The bags, which were distributed to retail stores and e-commerce merchants in Oregon and Washington, each have a “guaranteed fresh” date of February 11, 2025 and one of two manufacturing codes: 6462307xx or 6463307xx.

The recalled chips were made available to consumers back on Nov. 3, according to the announcement, which also said the recall was initiated after an issue with “undeclared milk” was reported “through a consumer contact.” .

The recall does not affect other Lay’s products, variety packs, chip flavors or bag sizes.

If you have a milk allergy, the company recommends not consuming the product and discarding it immediately.

Milk allergies are relatively common, especially in children under 16, states the Cleveland Clinic, adding that about 2% of children in the United States suffer from such an allergy.

And a milk allergy is different than lactose intolerance. People with lactose intolerance cannot fully digest the sugar in milk, while in people with milk allergies, the immune system reacts to certain proteins in milk and milk-containing products.

“All true food allergies are caused by a malfunction of the immune system,” says the Mayo Clinic. “If you have a milk allergy, your immune system recognizes certain milk proteins as harmful.”

Milk allergy symptoms may appear shortly after consuming milk or a product containing milk, or may develop over a slightly longer period of time. Symptoms that may appear immediately include hives, wheezing, vomiting and coughing or shortness of breath, and swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat.

Symptoms that may appear over time include watery eyes, a runny nose, abdominal cramps, and loose stools or diarrhea that may contain blood, according to the Mayo Clinic.

There are several ways to test if you have a milk allergy. For example, your doctor may order a blood test or a prick test. Always talk to your doctor about any concerns or symptoms.
