Tiger’s son makes the ace. Bernhard Langer makes the winning putt in the playoff against Woods at PNC

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods’ son scored the shot of his life on his first hole-in-one. Bernhard Langer hit the winning shot Sunday, an 18-foot eagle putt in a playoff, to beat Woods and son Charlie in a magnificent duel at the PNC Championship.

Langer and his 24-year-old son Jason won for the second year in a row, and the 67-year-old German has now won back-to-back PNC championships with two sons as partners.

They put on quite a show at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando, especially when 15-year-old Charlie hit his first ace with the 7-iron on the par-3 fourth hole and received a huge hug from his dad to remind him he would have to buy everyone a round of drinks.

“I’m broke,” Charlie replied.

Even after the loss, Charlie said the hole-in-one, the great final round, the playoffs, everything was the most fun he had on the golf course.

“It’s not even close,” he said.

His father agreed.

“It was the thrill of my life to be able to experience that moment with Charlie, making his first hole-in-one, (daughter) Sam on the ball, just our family and friends.” That’s what this event is about. It’s about bonding and family,” Woods said.

“I know we didn’t win, but it was the fact that we competed,” he said. “Nobody really made a mistake out there. We had to earn it and that’s what you want. Hats off to Langers. They played great.”

Team Langer and Team Woods each finished at 15-under 57 in the scramble format, with each team making just four pars, and set the tournament record at 28-under 116.

In the playoff, Langer had the advantage on the par 5 because of his age. He played the third tee shot, 82 yards from where Woods had to play and 52 yards from where the two sons hit.

Charlie has just reached the start of the green. His 25-foot eagle putt hit the edge of the hole but had too much speed. Woods missed deep. Jason Langer made his approach to 18 feet, leaving his ageless father to take the win.

It was Woods’ first time in a playoff since Zach Johnson beat him at the 2013 World Challenge in Sherwood.

On a chilly afternoon, every seat in the grandstand behind the 18th green was filled, and fans in jackets crowded the side of the fairway. It was entertaining and provided a rare opportunity to see Woods on the golf course. He played for the first time since lower back surgery in September. His last competition was the British Open in July.

Charlie was preparing for a big fist pump when his playoff eagle putt neared the hole. Langer threw both arms in the air as his winning putt fell.

It was another fantastic year for Langer, a two-time Masters champion. He tore his Achilles tendon playing pickleball earlier this year, recovered within four months and extended his winning streak on the 50-plus PGA Tour Champions by winning his 18th straight year.

And now he has six PNC Championship titles – four with Jason, two with Stefan, who caddyed for his little brother.

No one else was closer than five shots. Padraig Harrington and son Paddy were among those who shared third place and they had a very special moment when Paddy made a hole-in-one on the par 3 eighth hole.

“I was too excited. “You couldn’t have talked to me,” Harrington said as he watched his son make an ace. “I was gone. This is a great event and everything is great. And we try to play well, but that was pure joy.”

The tournament is open to winners of a major on any tour or the Players Championship and a family member. The purse is just over $1 million. Everyone seems to leave happy.
