“Tina Fey, Tom Hanks and More Add Martin Short to ‘SNL’ Five-Timers Club”

Saturday Night Live Legends Tina Fey, John Mulaney, Tom Hanks, Paul Rudd, Melissa McCarthy and more returned to Studio 8H on Saturday to induct Martin Short into the show’s Five Timers Club.

SNL’The Five Timers Club commemorates those who hosted the legendary sketch show five times. The group honors newcomers with a special robe-like jacket.

Hanks – who joined the club in 1990 – opened Saturday night’s episode wearing his own jacket. Soon the rest of the group appeared: As the cold snap continued, the cameos streamed in: Paul Rudd, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Wiig, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Melissa McCarthy and John Mulaney. Jimmy Fallon also appeared as the ceremonial “jacket boy,” who is not a member of the club but presents the actual clothing.

Hanks gave a brief overview of the Five-Timers’ history, saying they eventually became “an ingeniously lazy way to avoid writing a monologue.”

Fallon told Short, “I’m so happy to be here for this moment, so I want to present to you the official Five Timer’s Club jacket in your exact size – a women’s small.”

During her appearance, Short told Fey: “You’re one of the rarest things in Hollywood, a writer attractive enough to be in front of the camera.” She quipped to him: “You’re one of the rarest things in Hollywood, a loud man.”

Fey also conducted a pre-introduction test for the “Only Murders in the Building” star. “Name three current cast members,” she said. “I don’t know,” Short said. “Right and that was the whole test,” Fey joked.

Johannson’s appearance was marked by an appearance by her husband, SNL’s “Weekend Update” host Colin Jost. The couple received particularly loud cheers from the audience.

The star-studded introduction is themed with SNLThe current season is the 50th since its premiere in 1975. NBC will roll out the red carpet for the official anniversary in February, with a three-hour primetime special scheduled for February 16 (a Sunday!), a four-hour season. Episode documentaries, a music documentary and other celebrations.
