Tottenham 4 – 3 Man Utd

Tottenham 4 – 3 Man Utd

Tottenham beat Manchester United 4-3 to set up a Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool, on a night full of terrible goalkeeper howlers and defensive errors.

These two teams have had frustratingly inconsistent seasons and their defenses showed exactly why, with error-filled performances in north London that left both sets of fans exasperated and cheered during a rollercoaster contest.

Tottenham are in the semi-finals against Liverpool

Tottenham will face Liverpool in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, with the first leg at Spurs in the week of January 6th and the second leg at Anfield in the week of February 3rd.

Arsenal host Newcastle in the first leg of the other semi-final.

Fraser Forster fumbled twice with the ball at his feet to give United goals, helping Ruben Amorim’s side go from 3-0 down to 3-2. But as the visitors surged forward and threatened to equalize as tensions mounted in Tottenham, Altay Bayindir allowed Heung-Min Son’s corner kick over his head.

Add to that his poor save from Dominic Solanke, who opened the scoring on the night, and it’s hard to judge which substitute striker had the worse performance – but they weren’t the only ones.

Sky Sports’ Gary Neville beat Lisandro Martinez for his “soft” shot to Dejan Kulusevski for Spurs’ second goal, which came just 46 seconds into the second half. Soon after, the home side broke through the United defense again, with Solanke cutting inside Martinez before firing through the legs of Jonny Evans to seemingly put Spurs on cruise control.

Things are rarely that easy for Spurs, however, and Forster’s poor pass in his own penalty area was taken advantage of by Bruno Fernandes for Joshua Zirkzee to tuck in before the goalkeeper was hunted down for a second time by Amad Diallo. Even deep into stoppage time, Spurs found the opportunity to score from a set-piece and Evans nodded in to ensure the final seconds were as chaotic as before.

Team news

  • Destiny Udogie, who was substituted in Spurs’ win at Southampton, missed action, so Pedro Porro came into the backline while Yves Bissouma returned from suspension in place of Lucas Bergvall.
  • Marcus Rashford was once again missing from the Man Utd squad, although Alejandro Garnacho was back on the bench. They have made five changes since their derby win against Man City, with Matthijs de Ligt out.

When the final whistle sounded, there was a huge cheer from the home fans. Their hopes of ending their trophy drought are boosted – although their Final Four ties against Liverpool, who they drew with after the game, are so wild, it is impossible to say whether they will make it to Wembley or not.

Meanwhile, Man Utd’s momentum after winning the Manchester derby has stalled. From the off-field issues surrounding Marcus Rashford’s future to the on-field issues, Amorim has a tall task ahead of him – although both he and Ange Postecoglou will be hoping their teams can achieve more consistent and controlled success in the future when their long list of absentees returns.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou asks: “Aren’t you entertained?”

Tottenham Boss Ange Postecoglou To Sky Sports:

“We made it more difficult than it should have been, we were in control, playing really well, we looked like we were managing the game and then there were two unfortunate moments, the first involved Fraser and then came the second result of this. But we showed character and scored a fourth goal.

“I like the whole game. Aren’t you entertained? I know the studio is probably having a nervous breakdown because of my lack of tactics.”

“We have so many absences at the moment, central defenders, children on the bench. If we can get through this period, we will get tremendous growth out of it.”

Ruben Amorim felt his Man Utd side were the better side

Man Utd Boss Reuben Amorim:

“We controlled possession of the ball. We weren’t the best team the whole game, but for most parts I think we were the best team. We didn’t connect for eight minutes and it was hard to recover, but the boys did it. “It was a great job recovering. We were so close to a draw but the fourth goal was really tough for us.

“We disconnected for eight minutes and that cost us the game.”

On the question of whether the decision to leave out Rashford again was a mistake: “If I feel like I’m doing the right thing for the team, it’s never been a mistake. We have to make a choice. It wasn’t a mistake because I feel like I’m doing what’s best for the team from my perspective.” “

Injured Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario rages in the stands about his teammate Fraser Forster’s mistakes against Man Utd in the League Cup quarter-final.

“If it wasn’t serious, it would be hilarious!” How Sky experts reacted…

Jamie Redknapp:

“If it wasn’t so serious, it would be hilarious! But it was a masterclass in how not to miss a game against Tottenham. It was crazy to see, but a great result for Spurs that takes them to the semi-finals – but how often do we see it from them?

“I don’t know how the manager does it sometimes, he must be tearing his hair out, but some things are his fault, like passing the ball back to the goalkeeper – Forster is the worst player on the pitch with the ball.” so stop giving it to him.

“Absolute madness at times, but the chaos was so much fun.”

Gary Neville:

“Spurs almost deserved to win in the end, but what a strange game of football, lots of mistakes, goalkeepers everywhere and in the end Spurs come through.”

“There was a feeling when we arrived tonight it was a big night for Postecoglou and Spurs and maybe that just got them over the finish line in the end.”

Jamie Carragher:

“Because of the way Spurs have been at times this season, giving away leads, you could just feel the dynamic changing in the stadium.”

“Everyone felt the same when Man Utd scored their first goal and that’s exactly when United will score their second goal.”

“What I want to say is that Spurs are the most entertaining team in this league and every time I want them it’s a great game and they’ve been absolutely smashing here again.”
