Tottenham vs Manchester United LIVE: Carabao Cup team news, lineups and more tonight

Ruben Amorim responds to Marcus Rashford’s comments on Manchester United’s future

Tottenham host Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, with both teams looking to take another step towards their first major final of the season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side sit 10th in the Premier League after a string of mixed results, and the 2008 edition of the competition marks the last time Spurs won a trophy.

Despite last weekend’s derby win, United are still lower in the table and Ruben Amorim will be aware of the benefits of having gone far in the competition in his first season as manager.

Marcus Rashford is out of Manchester United’s squad, just days after saying in an interview he was ready for a “new challenge” away from the club.

Amorim left Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out of his squad to face Manchester City last weekend and although Garnacho is on the bench, Rashford did not travel to London.

Ruben Amorim explains why Marcus Rashford was left out of Man Utd’s squad

Ruben Amorim spoke to Sky Sports before the game and was unsurprisingly asked about Marcus Rashford’s absence. This is what the United boss said:

“I have selected the players who I believe can handle the demands of a strong game. I tried to imagine it all week and then select my players – just select.”

“It’s always the same for every player – not just Marcus. I had to make a choice and I did.”

Tottenham vs Man Utd team news

So, as we already knew, Rashford is not in the Man Utd squad tonight, but Garnacho will be reintegrated by starting on the bench. The United back line looks a little different with Altay Bayindir between the posts and a back three of Leny Yoro, Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez. Manuel Ugarte, Chrisian Eriksen and Antony also start further up front.

Spurs’ injury problems mean Ange Postecoglou doesn’t have many options as there were only two changes to the starting XI that started the impressive win over Southampton. Yves Bissouma is in place of Lucas Bergvall in midfield, while Pedro Porro starts in place of Destiny Udogie, who took a knock against the Saints. This means that Djed Spence switches to left-back and Porro can play on the right

Tottenham XI: Ranger; Porro, Dragusin, Gray, Spence; Sarr, Bissouma; Kulusevski, Maddison, son; Solanke

Man Utd XI: Bayindir; Yoro, Lindelof, Martinez; Mazraoui, Ugarte, Eriksen, Dalot; Antony, Fernandes; Hojlund

Tottenham’s deeply strange season reaches its biggest moment yet

When it is sometimes said that there is always a club in crisis in the Premier League, the warning for managers is: “That is not the case.” As Russell Martin ran down the tunnel at St Mary’s, just as Southampton scored a fifth before half-time After conceding a goal, Ange Postecoglou was relieved that Tottenham was no longer that club, at least for the time being.

Russell’s immediate exit after the 5-0 defeat, following that of Wolves’ Gary O’Neil and against the backdrop of Manchester City’s extraordinary collapse in Sunday’s derby, provided Spurs with a break in the hectic Premier League news cycle. Even on Thursday night, as Manchester United face Tottenham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, the impact of Marcus Rashford’s comments about his future and Ruben Amorim’s decision to name him and Alejandro Garnacho in his squad means there is less focus on Spurs their biggest game of the season so far.

Tottenham’s injury crisis ahead of the Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Tottenham are expected to have to use Archie Gray at centre-back again, while key defenders Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies are all in action.

Destiny Udogie is a big doubt after limping during this game. Djed Spence impressed against Southampton and may be needed again.

Guglielmo Vicario is out, so Fraser Forster replaces him in goal again.

Rashford will miss the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup

Marcus Rashford did not travel with the Manchester United squad ahead of their Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham on Wednesday night, but Alejandro Garnacho was pictured on the trip.

Rashford was the main topic at Wednesday’s press conference before United arrived by train. Amorim said he was keen to retain a player he had not yet spoken to when he faced the media.

“It’s hard to explain to you what I’m going to do (when I talk to him),” the United head coach said. “I’m a bit emotional (as a person), so I will immediately understand what I have to do.

“I’ll prepare the game and then we’ll see. Let’s focus on the team and not individual players. This is it.”

Rashford, who missed training on Monday due to illness, is now expected to sit out the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Tottenham.

“Really good, he trained really well. He seems a little mad at me and that’s perfect.
