Tottenham vs Manchester United Preview: Storylines, Odds, League Cup Quarter-Final Prediction

Tottenham vs Manchester United Preview: Storylines, Odds, League Cup Quarter-Final Prediction

Rarely has a game in the League Cup been as exciting as this one.

Tottenham Hotspur ended their disappointing run of success at the weekend with a comfortable 5-0 win at Southampton, which ultimately led to Russell Martin being sacked as Saints manager.

Not to be outdone, Manchester United triumphed with two late goals in the Manchester derby that added to Pep Guardiola’s misery and gave Ruben Amorim the greatest moment of his tenure at Old Trafford so far. After completely axing Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford from the squad, the United manager was perfectly happy with a memorable win.

Ange Postecoglou has expressed optimism this season and insists he will always win a trophy in his second year as coach. At times in recent weeks, his job appeared to be in jeopardy amid an injury crisis. That’s huge for the Australian as a win would take Spurs into the semi-finals and give them a serious chance of winning a trophy for the first time since their victory over Chelsea in the final of this competition in 2008. If United continue after an excellent week and a win over the hosts, the pressure on the Tottenham manager will be immense.

Spurs are still without goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario while Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended. Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies are also serious doubts about a visit from the Amorim team.

United, meanwhile, are likely to be without Mason Mount after he limped out in the derby. The midfielder must be wondering exactly how many mirrors he has broken considering he has been unlucky with injuries since joining the club from Chelsea. The same goes for Luke Shaw, who is out for the foreseeable future.

Match prediction

Tottenham 3-2 Manchester United

This game seems difficult to predict. United lost two games in a row under Amorim, then responded with an away win in the European Cup and the subsequent stunning victory over City. Some Spurs fans appeared to be running out of patience with their manager before five first-half goals at the weekend suggested the players still believe in his work and things could look very different once the injury crisis has subsided. With a win against United, Spurs will take another step towards a trophy, potentially leading to Postecoglou keeping his job and stopping the fans from becoming toxic
