Trevor Zegras of the Anaheim Ducks is out 6 weeks after knee surgery

The Anaheim Ducks announced that Trevor Zegras will be sidelined for at least six weeks after the forward underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.

Zegras was injured on Dec. 4 when he landed awkwardly and fell backwards while Vegas center William Karlsson was defending him in the second period. The timetable for his return begins at the end of January, provided he does not suffer any setbacks.

This is the third injury in the last 13 months that has sidelined Zegras for an extended period of time. The talented forward, who played center and wing for Anaheim, played in just 31 games last season as he recovered from a groin problem and a broken ankle that required surgery.

While there are concerns that he suffered three leg injuries in a relatively short period of time, the Ducks were pleased that Zegras did not suffer a serious knee injury as initially feared and that he is expected to make a full recovery.

This season, Zegras has four goals, six assists and a minus-7 rating at even strength in 24 games with the Ducks. He saw his offensive scoring numbers decline over the last two seasons as he worked to become a more responsible, defensively sound forward under coach Greg Cronin.

Zegras, whose name regularly comes up in industry conversations, is in the second year of a three-year contract extension that carries a salary cap hit of $5.75 million. In 2022, Zegras was a finalist for the Calder Trophy as the league’s best rookie, losing to Detroit’s Moritz Seider as runner-up.
