Trump sits down with Macron and visits Paris for Notre Dame reopening

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed US President-elect Donald Trump to the Elysee Palace in Paris on Saturday, ahead of the historic reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral five years after it was destroyed by fire.

After Trump, Macron will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It is not known whether Trump and Zelensky will meet.

It is the first time a foreign leader has hosted Trump since his victory in November and marks the president-elect’s first foreign trip since the election.

An estimated 50 world leaders are expected to attend the reopening of the cathedral, which has been closed since 2019 after a devastating fire destroyed the spire and roof and left the 860-year-old building minutes from collapse. President Joe Biden will not be present, but his wife, first lady Jill Biden, will represent the administration.

The visit could bring Trump to a face-to-face meeting with Zelensky, who was scheduled to sit with Macron at the French presidential palace immediately after him, according to a schedule released by the French government. Zelensky is also expected to attend the reopening of Notre Dame.

AFP previously reported, citing a Ukrainian government source, that Zelensky may meet with Trump during the trip. However, a Trump transition official said Friday afternoon that no meeting between the two is currently scheduled. The Ukrainian government could not immediately be reached for comment.

The couple last met in New York at the end of September, when Zelensky traveled to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly. The day after the US presidential election, the Ukrainian president confirmed that they had spoken by telephone, becoming one of the first foreign leaders to have a conversation with the new president.
