Ugly helmet-to-helmet hit from Azeez Al-Shaair injures Trevor Lawrence, sparks brawl between Jaguars and Texans

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was ejected Sunday after a direct helmet-to-helmet hit from Texas linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair left him on the field in Jacksonville.

The hit sparked a brawl between the teams and led to the ejection of Al-Shaair and Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones. Jaguars tight end Evan Engram was also penalized for unnecessary roughness for his role in the ensuing fight.

Lawrence eventually managed to recover from the hit and left the field sitting upright on a cart. He was was ejected from the game shortly afterwards with a head injury. Backup Mac Jones took over at quarterback.

The goal came in the second quarter when Houston had a 6-0 lead. Lawrence climbed to second and seventh near midfield and slid near the gain line. As Lawrence slipped, Al-Shair dove headfirst, the top of his head directly touching Lawrence’s helmet.

A flag was immediately thrown. Al-Shair’s first reaction was to protest the punishment before he was immediately met by Ingram. A brawl broke out and spilled onto the Jaguars sideline.

After the initial fight subsided, Jaguars guard Brandon Scherff approached Al-Shaair and another scuffle ensued.

After the ejections, Al-Shaair was escorted off the field by a police officer, several Texans employees and teammate Will Anderson Jr. As he approached the tunnel, Al-Shaair was surrounded by fans.

According to the CBS broadcast, fans threw objects at Al-Shair as he left the field.
