Unclear impact of Nets trading Dennis Schröder

Unclear impact of Nets trading Dennis Schröder

Tomorrow the Brooklyn Nets’ deal to send Dennis Schröder to the Golden State Warriors will become official. However, the far-reaching impacts will occur throughout the 2024-25 season and continue into the offseason.

Despite the obvious implications of the trade, even more obscure implications are also emerging, particularly among Brooklyn’s younger players.

While Cam Thomas continues to recover from his hamstring problem, the Nets lack depth in the backcourt outside of Shake Milton.

Enter Killian Hayes and Dariq Whitehead.

Hayes, a lottery pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, signed with Brooklyn last summer but ultimately didn’t survive final roster cuts and earned a spot with its G League affiliate. He lives with the Long Island Nets alongside Whitehead, the Nets’ first-round pick last season.

The former has not yet been recalled from the G League since landing with Brooklyn, and the latter has only appeared in three games this season. To his credit, Whitehead took full advantage of his opportunity in the blowout loss to the Chicago Bulls on December 2nd, hitting six 3-pointers en route to 18 points.

With Schröder’s departure (and other transactions expected in the future), both young players could take on roles on the active roster.

In Jordi Fernandez’s first season at the helm, the experience gain will pay dividends for Hayes and Whitehead as the Nets continue the first year of their complete rebuild.

While Brooklyn says goodbye to one guard, it could welcome two more in the coming days.
