Universal confirms that Christopher Nolan’s next film will adapt the mythical Greek epic The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s films are all, in their own way, odyssey epics, Homeric journeys into dreams (beginning), Space (Interstellar), Time (principle), Science (Oppenheimer), magic (The prestige), billionaires in batsuits (The Dark Knight Trilogy). But now, after months of frantic speculation about what the Oscar-winning auteur will dream up next with Universal, we know exactly what Nolan’s next cinematic odyssey will look like. And well, it’s the granddaddy of them all – that’s it The Odyssey. Yes, just tonight Universal casually tweeted the big news that newly knighted Sir Christopher Nolan’s 13th film will be a globe-trotting adaptation of Homer’s epic Greek poem in IMAX format.

Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey “is a mythical action epic shot around the world using brand-new IMAX film technology,” Universal’s official post reads. “The film brings Homer’s quintessential saga to IMAX screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.” Well, that certainly is not the Nolan vampire film or The Blue thunder Riffing helicopter capers that we’ve heard so much talk about in the last few weeks. Rather, it is the mother of all epic adventures, that of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his long and dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. Now we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves and start drooling over the prospect of Cyclops and Sirens, Charybdis and Scylla, but the promise of brand new IMAX technology and Nolan’s famously keen eye for detail and authenticity make it something quite special. It’s hard to resist not to become a little dizzy at the prospect of what awaits us.

We do nothing to temper the already sky-high expectations for Nolan Oppenheimer Follow-up is the absolute star constellation that the British filmmaker has assembled for his latest film. Tom Holland, Zendaya, Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron have all already signed up for the odyssey – actually The Odyssey – that’s what awaits, and more big names are sure to join in soon as Nolan sets out to bring one of the most iconic stories in all of fiction to life. We bring you more closer The Odyssey as soon as we get it, but for now, consider this news a tempting gift on Christmas Eve. Ho, Ho, Ho(mer) – Merry Christmas!
