University of Dubuque opens new medical school

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – The University of Dubuque announced Friday that it plans to open the first new medical school in Iowa in more than a century.

The University of Dubuque’s goal is to open its College of Osteopathic Medicine with 800 students enrolled by August 2028.

According to the university, osteopathic medicine offers a holistic medical approach that treats the entire person – mind, body and spirit.

“Building a medical school is no easy task,” said Travis L. Frampton, president of the University of Dubuque. “This endeavor has been quietly underway for more than a year and is led by dedicated people who have worked tirelessly to develop this vision. Today we are making this vision public.”

The University of Dubuque plans to open its John and Alice Butler College of Osteopathic Medicine in downtown Dubuque. Multiple locations are being considered.

“In communities like ours, whether in Dubuque, our region, Iowa or along the rural-urban border in the United States, there is a persistent shortage of physicians. This dramatically impacts access to appropriate care, which has a significant impact on healthcare delivery and health outcomes. To change this trajectory, we need to educate, prepare and equip more doctors. By establishing a medical school in the Tri-State, the University of Dubuque will be able to serve our community and achieve our goals missionsaid Travis Frampton, PhD, president of the University of Dubuque.
