Update: Man charged with making terroristic threats at Destiny USA threatened to kill two people

Syracuse, NY – A 50-year-old man was charged with making a terroristic threat Friday after he prevented the opening of Destiny USA, police said.

Darrell Anderson Navedo of Syracuse threatened in an Internet chat to go to Destiny USA and kill two people, according to an emergency risk protection order filed Friday by the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office.

According to court documents describing the exchange, it was not clear whether the threat was directed at two specific people.

But the man said he had a “bomb, an Uzi and a 4k47” at the ready, which he showed to the person who ultimately tipped off law enforcement, according to court documents.

The authorities decided this on Friday Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile said the Syracuse police chief temporarily suspended operations after investigating the threat received this morning.

“We looked at it and found it to be very specific and very actionable. “So we assembled a team of local, regional, state and federal partners and reached out to mall management and mall owners to engage with them with a plan,” Cecile said Friday afternoon at Destiny USA.

The mall normally opens at 10 a.m., but only employees were allowed inside this morning. Shops were asked to close their doors and postpone their opening, police said. No shelter-in-place was provided and employees were not asked to evacuate, it said.

At around 11 a.m. the entrances to the mall could be seen being blocked by New York State Police. The reason for this was to keep out people trying to get into the mall while operations were suspended, Cecile said. According to Kieran Coffey, a spokesman for the Syracuse Police Department, the man was later taken into custody around 3 p.m

Destiny USA has officially been cleared to reopen and is safe for malls, Destiny USA management said in a news release Friday at 5 p.m.
