Texas A&M (8-4, 5-3 SEC) finished the season with a record that only makes Aggie fans doubt its future under first-year head coach Mike Elko, as the 17-7 Saturday night’s home loss to Texas epitomized the Aggies’ offensive woes following the season-ending injury to star running back Le’Veon Moss.

From start to finish, the only thing that kept the Longhorns from outscoring A&M by three or more touchdowns were a handful of turnovers, including cornerback Will Lee’s pick-six that didn’t generate the offensive momentum we expected.

While it will take the Aggie fan base about a week to digest the loss, Mike Elko deserves some leeway in his first season. Still, it’s fair to say that OC Collin Klein takes most of the blame for the poor play calling, which included two stops in the red zone and too many run calls inside the zone.

When measuring success in a head coach’s first season, the only way to achieve success on the field is to make the necessary changes in the offseason to replenish and avoid a rebuild.

Texas A&M now awaits their bowl game goal and the Texas Longhorns are headed to the SEC Championship Game, a feat the Aggies have never accomplished.
