USMNT winger Zendejas scores the winning goal

Alex Zendejas scored a goal and an assist as Club América beat Monterrey 2-1 in the first leg of the Liga MX final on Thursday.

The win puts América on the verge of a third consecutive Liga MX title. The title will be decided in the second leg on Sunday at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey.

But the first leg belonged to the U.S. men’s national team winger, who scored for two games in a row after also scoring in the U.S.’s 4-3 win over Cruz Azul in the semifinal second leg.

Monterrey took the lead on Thursday thanks to a goal from Sergio Canales in the 35th minute, but Las Águilas Four minutes later, Kevin Álvarez hit a ball into the goal, which came loose after Zendejas thwarted his own attempted finish.

Although Zendejas’ assist was a stroke of luck, his game-winning goal was not a stroke of luck.

Álvaro Fidalgo played a through ball to Zendejas, who turned sharply away from his defender with his first touch of the ball and then fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

Zendejas’ international teammate Brandon Vazquez came on as a substitute for Monterrey in the 66th minute Rayados looking for an equalizer on the road. But the striker was unable to make much of an impact as he completed all five passes but failed to fire a shot.
