Utah is expected to sign New Mexico OC Jason Beck

The University of Utah is targeting New Mexico’s Jason Beck as the program’s next offensive coordinator, Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reports.

Beck spent last season in the same role for the Lobos, leading one of the most potent offenses in the country.

This season, New Mexico:

• Ranked 4th in total offense, averaging 484 yards per game.

• Scored 49 offensive touchdowns (294 points).

• Averaged 253.6 rushing yards per game, good for the fifth-best rushing attack in the country.

• Was 28th in offense, averaging 33.5 points per game.

Beck, 44, was in his first season with the Lobos after spending two seasons at Syracuse, where he was the program’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

In Beck’s only season playing for the Orange, they averaged 25.5 points per game in 12 contests. SU’s offense was the third-worst in the ACC this season, just ahead of Wake Forest and Pitt, averaging 343.3 yards per game and 171 passing yards per game.

Before that, Beck was quarterbacks coach at Virginia from 2016-21 and at in-state rival BYU from 2013-2015. With the Cougars, Beck helped develop now-New Orleans Saints all-around quarterback Taysom Hill.

Now the Oxnard, California native will focus on taking over the Utes’ offense in Salt Lake City. His hiring comes after the Utes traded current Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and Texas Tech offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich earlier this week.

Over the past two seasons, Utah’s offense has struggled to find its rhythm under Andy Ludwig, who retired during the season. After finishing the season with a 28-14 win over UCF, the Utes officially ended their 2024 season ranked next to last in the Big 12 in total offense.

After starting the season undefeated, the Utes, marred by their offensive woes, suffered a seven-game losing streak and finished the season with their worst record (5-7) since 2013.

Even though Beck’s signing is complete, the Utes still have important items left on their offseason checklist. In the coming weeks, Utah awaits decisions from both quarterback Cam Rising and head coach Kyle Whittingham on whether they will return next season.
