Former New England Patriots stars Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski reflected fondly on a special Thanksgiving memory before the annual holiday.

During Thursday’s episode of Boys about boys On the podcast with Edelman and Gronkowski, the former teammates reflected on the Patriots’ Thanksgiving 2012 victory over the New York Jets, which featured the infamous “butt fumble” play.

The play occurred when Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork pressured Jets guard Brandon Moore, and this contributed to Moore’s back end colliding with Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, who lost the ball as the Patriots safety Steven Gregory picked it up and scored a touchdown.

Edelman spoke about Wilfork’s efforts and how they contributed to dominance.

“He drives his guy back so far that he hit the quarterback with the butt of the guy he was driving back, causing him to fumble the football,” Edelman said (1:00:00). “…It was just a crazy game.”

Gronkowski chimed in, noting that Wilfork received a special reward after the game and didn’t let it go to waste.

“He was rewarded with a turkey leg in the postgame for his contribution to the buttfumble,” Gronkowski said (1:01:01). “He ate everything.”

New England would win that game 49-19 and improve to 7-3 on the season. The Patriots would finish 12-4 that season and advance to the AFC Championship. New York fell to 4-6 and finished the season at 6-10.

The year after that game, the Patriots would win three more Super Bowls with Edelman and Gronkowski and continue to be a force in the AFC. New York has been in a playoff drought since 2010 and the butt fumble was a defining moment of the Sanchez era.
