A huge sinkhole formed on the side of a busy New Jersey highway on Thursday, forcing drivers to take detours to avoid the area.

The sinkhole formed after a portion of the right lane and shoulder collapsed near the Wharton exit on eastbound Interstate 80, about 40 miles west of New York City. Officials estimated the depression extended 40 feet wide and 40 feet deep.
