Vincent Kompany praises players and fans despite the 0-1 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup

Bayern Munich suffered another early exit from the DFB Cup, this time with a 1-0 defeat in the round of 16 against reigning Bundesliga champions and title rivals Bayer Leverkusen.

While it is undoubtedly disappointing to be eliminated from a competition for the first time in the 2024/25 season, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was still able to take some positives from the game.

“Of course it’s so bitter that we’re eliminated,” Kompany said after the game in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “The red card affected the game, but the boys did very well and showed character. I’ve played so many games when you’re outnumbered and I know how difficult it is. We created chances when we were outnumbered, but unfortunately we couldn’t score a goal. The fans gave us an extra boost and were the extra man. We have to distinguish between the elimination and the fact that the boys performed very well. I can’t blame anyone.”

The result actually seemed to depend on Manuel Neuer’s red card, which is unfortunate. With all eleven players on the pitch, the result could have been completely different.

Even without it, Bayern had chances. Despite being outnumbered, the players’ reaction reflects a positive attitude on the part of the players. A small but pleasing plus after a bitter result.

One can only hope that Kompany and Bayern can continue to improve and advance to next year’s cup.
