Virginia (5-7, 3-5 ACC) suffered a 37-17 loss to Virginia Tech (6-6, 4-4 ACC) in the Commonwealth Clash on Saturday night at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia. Virginia keeps its drive going on 4th-and-10 when Muskett Suderian hits Harrison down the right sideline for 11 yards, continuing Harrison’s strong night. But Muskett throws an interception on the next play, overthrows Harrison and is picked off by Mansoor Delane.

It appeared Virginia caught Bhayshul Tuten a few yards short of the first down in what would have been a crucial stop, but Kam Robinson can’t complete the tackle and Tuten escapes, takes a home run and runs 58 yards for a touchdown. Game over.

Virginia went three-and-out when Harrison dropped a pass down the sideline, Muskett ran to a short lead, and then Muskett’s third down was once again too long for Trell Harris. UVA takes a delay of game with its punt, but Daniel Sparks makes up for it with a 59-yard punt that flips the field.

Virginia posts its first sack of the game as Mike Diatta and a number of other UVA defenders take Pop Watson to the ground. The Cavaliers are able to leave the field and force a Virginia Tech punt. With a little less than 10 minutes left, UVA got the ball back to within 13 points.

Muskett continues to use his legs effectively and runs eight yards to initiate the drive. He completes a 19-yard shot to Kam Courtney near midfield. Muskett ran again for 11 yards and then found Suderian Harrison on the left edge for 18 yards and another first down on the final play of the third quarter. Muskett moves the chains with his legs on 3rd-and-2 and then rushes for a five-yard touchdown two plays later to cap an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. UVA’s two-point conversion failed, leaving the score still 30-17.

Virginia Tech drives the ball the length of the field in an instant as Watson hits Ali Jennings for 11 yards and then again for 40 yards before finding Ayden Greene for another 15 yards inside the UVA red zone. However, the Cavalier defense holds as Kempton Shine makes a great play to break up what appears to be a touchdown reception for Stephen Gosnell. Instead, the Hokies settled for a 28-yard chip throw from John Love to make it 30-11.

Muskett finds Malachi Fields over the middle of the field for 16 yards into Virginia Tech territory. UVA gets a lucky break when Muskett is hit while throwing the ball and fumbles, but somehow the Cavaliers manage to recover the fumble and Virginia Tech is assessed an unsportsmanlike penalty to boot. Muskett finished the drive with his legs, running 15 yards around the left side to the Virginia Tech 2-yard line and then hitting it on the next play. Virginia goes for a two-point and converts, while Muskett hits Tyler Neville for the two-point conversion, making it a two-possession game.

Virginia Tech scores with ease after turnovers on downs. Watson completes a 14-yard pass to Lane, Bhayshul Tuten runs 12 yards into the red zone, Lane gets the ball backwards and gains 14 yards, and then Watson runs it untouched to a QB keeper for a five-yard touchdown. Hokies lead by 24 points.

Virginia manages to get a first down on its first drive of the second half, but the Cavaliers then turn the ball over on downs when Chris Tyree is unsuccessfully stopped on a run up the middle on 4th-and-1. Virginia Tech will have advantageous field position and the chance to extend its lead.

Watson finds Ayden Greene for 11 yards but is tackled downfield. Time might have expired in halftime, but UVA’s Billy Koudelka is whistled for an illegal hands-to-the-face penalty. That moves the ball to the UVA 17-yard line and, more importantly, stops the clock and allows the Hokies to bring in John Love, who kicks through a 31-yard field goal. At halftime, Virginia Tech leads Virginia 20-3.

On third down, Tony Muskett attempts a deep ball and Dakota Twitty draws pass interference. On the next play, Muskett overthrows Suderian Harrison and his pass is intercepted by Jaylen Jones. Malachi Fields chases Jones and takes the ball from him, but the fumble goes out of bounds. Virginia Tech takes over after the Muskett interception at UVA’s 46-yard line.

Pop Watson takes a swing and delivers a perfect deep ball to Jaylin Lane, who makes the catch with flying colors and runs untouched to the end zone for a 66-yard touchdown. This gives the Hokies a 14-point lead.

Virginia makes its longest offensive play of the game when Tony Muskett comes out of the pocket and finds Suderian Harrison down the right sideline for a 24-yard pickup. Muskett narrowly overthrew Tyler Neville with a pass down the seam that could have scored a touchdown. Virginia Tech holds on and UVA has to settle for a field goal. Will Bettridge comes and converts the 37-yard field goal to put the Cavaliers on the field.

Virginia’s defense settled in and forced another three-pointer. Corey Thomas Jr. made a good tackle in the series and Anthony Britton made the game-winning stop on third down, forcing a second straight three-pointer. UVA’s offense moves the ball near midfield after the punt.

Virginia gets a first down after a nice third down run by Noah Vaughn, but the drive stalls afterward when Tony Muskett underthrows Trell Harris with another deep ball. UVA will punt for the third time.

Pop Watson opened with a deep ball to Stephen Gosnell but overthrew it. Virginia’s defense forces the first punt of the game, forcing the Hokies to make a three-pointer.

On the first play of the second quarter, Muskett throws to Noah Vaughn on the flat and he runs to 3rd and long for the first down. Muskett tries to pass the ball and miscommunicates with his running back, but he manages to make something out of nothing and rushes for another first down. The Cavaliers find themselves in another third-and-long situation and Muskett attempts a deep ball to Trell Harris, but the pass is well covered and broken up by Mansoor Delane. UVA gets a few first downs but ultimately strikes again.

Virginia Tech moves the ball into UVA territory, but the Cavaliers hold their own after a holding penalty puts the Hokies in their place. John Love comes into the game and shoots his 44-yard field goal attempt through the uprights. Virginia Tech leads 10-0.

Virginia tries a Flea Flicker on its first offensive play of the game, but Tony Muskett is immediately sacked. Trell Harris, returning after missing the last eight games with injury, drops the ball on his first goal, and then Muskett Suderian can’t find Harrison on third-and-long. UVA goes three-and-out.

Virginia Tech has poor field position to start the drive thanks to a great tackle by Ethan Davies on the opening kickoff, but that doesn’t matter as the Hokies drive 90 yards in 11 plays to score on their first possession of the game. Pop Watson found Da’Quan Felton wide open in the middle of the field for 42 yards and then Bhayshul Tuten found the end zone untouched on a six-yard touchdown run.

UVA’s captains for today’s game are Tony Muskett, Suderian Harrison, Chico Bennett Jr. and Will Bettridge. Virginia won the coin toss and postponed it until the second half. Virginia Tech receives the ball to start the game.

As previously reported, Tony Muskett will start at quarterback for Virginia, while Pop Watson will begin his career quarterback for Virginia Tech.
