Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf help Michigan basketball to big win over No. 11 Wisconsin

The Wolverines made an opening statement in coach Dusty May’s Big Ten debut.

Powered by a combined 44 points from Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf, Michigan handed No. 11 Wisconsin its first loss of the season (67-64) at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

Goldin had 24 points, scoring the go-ahead goal with 1:34 left, and Wolf added 20 points for Michigan (7-1), extending its winning streak to six games and defeating second-ranked opponents in a row.

After a rocky first half, Michigan’s two-man game against Wolf and Goldin gave Wisconsin fits in the second half. During a back-and-forth sequence, Wolf found Goldin on a pick-and-roll play for a dunk before Wolf answered a Wisconsin 3-pointer with one of his own.

On consecutive offensive possessions, Wolf connected with Goldin down the court on another pair of baskets. The first time, Wolf drove deep and threw a pass to Goldin for a short hook throw. On the next play, he threw a pass to a rolling Goldin for an open dunk, giving Michigan a 44-41 lead with 14:26 to play.

The teams traded baskets and leads in the final 12 minutes, where there was no shortage of action. A 3-pointer from Nimari Burnett gave Michigan the lead with 9:05 to play. A three-point play by Kamari McGee put Wisconsin ahead by one two minutes later.

The Wolverines pulled back four more times down the stretch, including two stunning layups from Wolf. But after the Badgers took a three-point lead, the Wolverines responded with two shots from Goldin that gave them a 65-64 lead with 1:34 left.

From there, Michigan held on, getting two defensive stops before Goldin nailed a hook shot with 22 seconds left to make it a three-point game.

Wisconsin had a few chances to tie the game in the final seconds. On the ensuing possession, the Badgers missed a 3-pointer. Then, after Roddy Gayle Jr. missed the front end on a one-on-one, Wisconsin secured the rebound and Michigan chose to foul, sending Nolan Winter to the free throw line with two seconds left.

Winter missed the front end of the one-and-one and Goldin secured the rebound. After Goldin missed the front end of another one-two, Wisconsin’s late shot bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

John Tonje scored 18 points for the Badgers. He entered the game ranked No. 2 in the Big Ten in scoring at 22.9 points per game and No. 7 in the nation in scoring.

John Blackwell scored 16 points for Wisconsin (8-1), which fell to 6-1 at home.

The Wolverines got off to a rough offensive start in their first true road game of the season. You’ve missed out on some good looks and missed out on some other things. They missed 13 of their first 16 shots and fell into an early hole.

Wisconsin had some problems in the first half as neither team shot the ball well. But the Badgers managed to score seven unanswered points by getting to the free throw line and turning a Tonje steal into a transition dunk to grab a 17-8 lead at the 11:52 mark.

Michigan responded and defended behind its big men. Wolf, who stopped five shots in the first half, put the ball away and earned a fastbreak opportunity that ended with two free throws.

That sequence sparked a 12-1 run for the Wolverines. Goldin threw down two dunks during the sprint, including a thunderous one-handed jam. Wolf scored on an offensive putback and hit a second-chance 3-pointer to give Michigan a 20-18 lead at 7:42.
