The Iowa Hawkeyes’ stay in the Cancun Challenge continues with a game against BYU (6-1) on Friday night.

Iowa defeated Rhode Island 69-62 on Thanksgiving Day to remain undefeated and improve to 7-0.

The Hawkeyes received unfortunate injury news before tipoff against Rhode Island. Star point guard Lucy Olsen suffered a freak accident before a practice in Iowa. Olsen was sidelined against Rhode Island and will remain “game-to-game,” according to Iowa basketball coach Jan Jensen.

The injury is not “season-altering or season-ending,” but Iowa and coach Jensen are cautious about giving Olsen time to return healthy.

Senior center Addison O’Grady led the way in the Hawkeyes’ win over the Rams, scoring 18 points on 8 of 9 shooting. Junior forward Hannah Stuelke contributed 13 points and senior guard Kylie Feuerbach added 12.

BYU won its opening game of the Cancun Challenge against Rice 63-51. Freshman guard Delaney Gibb was the Cougars’ leading scorer with 20 points.

Iowa 68, BYU 65: Without senior point guard Lucy Olsen, Iowa’s offense will be unsettled.

Having a game without Olsen should help, but ultimately Iowa finds just enough offense through senior center Addison O’Grady and junior forward Hannah Stuelke. The Hawkeyes combine this offense with a great defensive performance to remain undefeated as they leave Cancun.
