Weather impact warnings for wind on Monday and snow on Thursday

After the ball drop on New Year’s Eve our temperatures will also drop.

Hey, we get it. It’s Western New York in January. Expect snow and colder temperatures.

However, we would like to warn you that after a mild weekend with a rainy Sunday and a windy Monday with showers, our temperatures will fall below average through the end of the week.

StormTeam2 has issued weather impact warnings for wind gusts of 55-60 mph for all of WNY, except for the inland Southern Tier, where there will be gusts of approximately 40 mph. The timing will be when the strongest winds will occur overnight through midday Monday.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued some warnings. A high wind warning is in effect for Niagara, Erie, Orleans, Genesee and Chautauqua counties Sunday evening through Monday afternoon. Winds can blow 25-40 miles per hour, with gusts up to 60 miles per hour!

A lakeshore flood warning will also be in effect for portions of Erie and Chautauqua counties along Lake Erie, including Route 5 in Hamburg, Dunkirk and locations in downtown Buffalo such as Canalside from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon. It is likely that water will be “pushed” into coastal areas, such as Hoover Beach in Hamburg.

The mercury will be above 30, with a chance of showers for the New Year’s Eve ball drop in Buffalo.

Temperatures on Wednesday will be cold enough to support snow development in the lake. The wind direction comes from the northwest and/or west with temperatures around 20 °C; a perfect combination for lake effect snow south of Buffalo.

It’s far too early to predict snow amounts, but increasing snowfall will be a virtual lock in the southern Tier region Wednesday night through Thursday.

As we say goodbye to 2024, stay updated on the sudden return of winter weather.

After Christmas is a good time to buy winter clothes, and it’s also a good time to buy skis, sleds and shovels.

Of course, Storm Team 2 will give you all the details without the hype when the flakes start flying.

Again, January is always cold, but keep in mind that this January will be colder than average.
