NEWSROOM AND CHECK OUT OUR OTHER BIG STORY HAPPENING NOW. KCRA 3 WEATHER AND A LIVE LOOK AT CONDITIONS ALONG I-80 NEAR EMIGRANT GAP, WHERE SNOW HAS DEMANDED TRAFFIC ALL EVENING. It’s also a wet night in the valley and foothills. HERE’S A LOOK AT STOCKTON, SACRAMENTO AND RANCHO CORDOVA. Rain began to fall around five o’clock and was consistent throughout the evening, making the rain and snow showers a KCRA 3 weather impact day and night. WE HAVE A TEAM REPORT TONIGHT ON SNOW AND RAIN. CATALINA ESTRADA LIVES IN CISCO GROVE WITH AN EYE ON ROAD CONDITIONS IN THE SIERRA WHERE CHAIN CHECKS APPLY. But let’s start with KCRA 3 METEOROLOGIST HEATHER WALDMAN. So yeah, the Doppler is pretty well lit there. YES THAT’S IT. AND THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT ALL OF THIS WILL BE HEARD OUT OF HERE WHEN MOST OF US GET UP TOMORROW MORNING AND READY TO GO OUT THE DOOR. It will end fairly early in the morning, but it will be wet for the rest of this evening, especially in the foothills. There the air moves up the western slope of the Sierra, so to speak. It’s all about squeezing out that extra moisture, like wringing out a sponge. So it will continue for the next four to five hours and it will be a little windy, especially north of Sacramento. WE WILL RECEIVE SOME WIND GUSTS UP TO 35 MPH. THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS ACROSS SOUTH LAKE TAHOE NOW. A LITTLE BIT OF RAIN AND SNOW MIXTURE. THE TEMPERATURE AT THE AIRPORT IN SOUTH LAKE IS 25 DEGREES, IT’S COLD ENOUGH THAT ALL THE FALLS ARE ON THE GROUND AND MAKE THINGS A LITTLE ICE. Snow levels are currently around 5,500 feet. What will happen overnight is that the snow depth will actually increase tomorrow morning. Temperatures in Truckee and South Lake will be closer to 40 degrees. IT WILL RISE ANOTHER TEN DEGREES HERE IN THE NEXT HOURS. WE NOW HAVE CHAIN CONTROLS AT 80, 50 AND 88. IT IS LIKELY THAT THIS WILL STAY OVERNIGHT THIS EVENING EARLY TOMORROW AS WE SEE THE SWITCH FROM SNOW TO RAIN. This will help. This will help melt anything stuck to the road, but it will still be a bit slow for the first few hours of the day. DO YOU SEE THE BOOK HERE WITH OUR 12 HOUR FORECAST? 7AM TEMPERATURES IN THE MID 40’S OR BELOW 40’C BUT THEN THE REST OF THE DAY LOOKS DRY. IT WILL BE EASIER FOR TRAVEL. More rain and snow is forecast for this weekend. I’ll show you when, with the full forecast in just a few minutes. Okay, I’ll see you soon. HEATHER. HERE’S A LOOK AT CONDITIONS RECENTLY AGO ALONG I-80 NEAR KINGVALE. CHAIN CONTROLS ALWAYS APPLY FROM NYACK TO THE TRUCKEE. YOU CAN ALSO SEE THE PLOWS GOING THROUGH THERE. KCRA 3’s CATALINA ESTRADA was on Live Tracker 3 along I-80 all day and night tracking these conditions. CATALINA. I know you’ve seen it all. WHERE ARE YOU NOW? And what do the streets look like? YES. ANDREA, WE’RE ACTUALLY JUST DRIVING THROUGH NYACK. We’re on I-80 heading west. I WANT TO GIVE YOU A LOOK AT WHAT WE’RE SEEING LIVE OUT HERE. HERE YOU CAN JUST VIEW THE VEHICLES. They park on the side of the road. LOTS OF LARGE RIGS JUST PUTTING THE CHAINS ON. And we’re making really slow progress. WE HAVE SEEN THAT HEAVY SNOW IS COMING ON US NOW. WE HAVE OUR WINDSHIELDS ON. There is a lush, lush mix on the streets of this area. Above all, drivers still drive very slowly. I just make sure they are safe while driving. In these conditions here on Interstate I-80, you can see all these big rigs, people just putting these chains on with their dangers. And we spoke to a few riders this evening who said they faced some pretty treacherous conditions this evening. SO ALL THE HOLIDAY TRAVELERS HAVE A HARD TIME. We also have video today from a gas station near Kingvale where drivers simply had to stop due to chain checks. And we met some good Samaritans from Colorado. They were on vacation in SACRAMENTO and are on their way to Reno. THEY TELL US THAT THEY HAVE DECIDED TO HELP SEVERAL RIDERS WHO HAVE DIFFICULTY IN INSERTING THEIR CHAINS. PEOPLE TELL US THERE WERE REALLY DELAYS AND SNOW-COVERED ROADS ON INTERSTATE 80. THESE CONDITIONS ALWAYS GET WORSE IN THE EVENING HOURS. LISTEN TO. And people walked past me. I think they went faster than expected. So that’s my recommendation. DRIVE ACCORDING TO ROAD CONDITIONS AND THEN DRIVE DEFENSIVELY. I was a little freaked out, so I called my parents and they said, “Just pull over on the road and see what you can do.” And like I said, we just showed up and they were kind enough to help us . I just have to help him. And then as you can see the traffic, if you’re afraid for your life, if not, then there are other people who have families that you have to be careful outside, $15 or $50 or $100. IT DOES NOT MATTER. IT’S YOUR LIFE. And here we see the sign that says “Ice and Snow”. PLEASE TAKE IT SLOW. They’re really asking drivers to take these precautions again. HERE YOU CAN SEE ALL THE VEHICLES JUST WAITING TO PUT THE CHAINS ON. WE SEE. IN ORDER. It looks like we lost Catalina’s signal there. AGAIN. SHE’S NOW ON I-80 IN NYACK, AND WE WILL LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS WITH HEATHER SHORTLY. IN ORDER. Now let’s move on to the tracking conditions on Highway 50. And here’s a look, this is near Meyers. AND YOU CAN SEE THE TRAFFIC IS FLYING SLOWLY. AND THIS BIG VEHICLE THAT DRIVES THIS CIRCUIT BEAUTIFULLY SLOW. CHAIN CONTROLS ALWAYS APPLY FROM KYBURZ TO MYERS. And remember, you can use the app to track weather updates where you live. KCRA THREE APP, AND THERE IS AN INTERACTIVE RADAR THAT WILL ALLOW YOU TO SEE AND AVOID THE EXPECTED IMPACT OF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
