Here’s a football story from the AP:

LONDON (AP) — Emma Hayes led her U.S. team to a dominant performance without a win at a packed Wembley Stadium on their return to England on Saturday.

Hayes, a Londoner who coached the U.S. women to an Olympic soccer gold medal this summer after winning 14 major trophies with Chelsea, came home for a friendly against European champions England.

In the duel between the two best women’s teams in the FIFA rankings, the USA had the best chances, but the game ended goalless.

“I’m super proud of the way we committed to the game, it’s just the last part of the field,” Hayes said. “In general, I am satisfied with the performance.”

The USA were without their injured attacking trio Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson. But the visitors’ quality overwhelmed England, who were also struggling with injury problems. Striker Lauren Hemp and defender Maya Le Tissier were ruled out.

Alyssa Thompson’s curling shot forced an early save from England goalkeeper Mary Earps as the USA pinned England in their half and turned the English ball over too easily in midfield. The Americans dominated possession and gave themselves plenty of space to develop their game and press high.

But in the final third they lacked the lead and couldn’t break the deadlock.

Sam Coffey’s shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 44th minute was easily stopped by Earps, and early in the second half US captain Lindsey Horan had a goal disallowed, then missed the target with an angled shot.

The USA also received a penalty, but it was overturned after VAR showed the ball hit Alex Greenwood’s chest and not her arm.

But one of the most successful coaches in women’s football was satisfied. Hayes won seven Women’s Super Leagues during her 12-year spell at Chelsea. During this time the men’s team has had 11 different managers.

She was asked how she felt sitting in the away bench listening to the England national anthem.

“You can be two things at once,” Hayes said. “I am a proud Englishwoman who is proud to coach America. I don’t have to choose, I definitely love both countries.”
