What CSU football's Jay Norvell said after Snoop Dogg's loss in the Arizona Bowl

TUCSON, Ariz. – The 2024 season ended with a bang for the Colorado State football program.

The Rams lost 43-17 to Miami (Ohio) in the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl.

This is what CSU coach Jay Norvell said after the loss.

Jay Norvell opens up about his thoughts on the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl loss

“I just want to congratulate Miami. They did what they normally do. They played a very similar game that they have played all year. We talked a lot about what we needed to do to win this game and we didn’t execute what we needed to do. We talked about how we wanted to run the ball effectively, we wanted to play field position and we didn’t want to turn the ball over, and we didn’t do any of that tonight. I know this game will be analyzed a lot. It’s pretty simple. We turned the ball over, we took too many penalties, and if you do that, you can’t win. I think if you look at yardage and all that, we’re probably ahead in a lot of those stats, but the most important stats that matter are turnovers. Proud of our seniors. There are a lot of tears and a lot of hugs in the locker room. We talked about the 27 seniors who sacrificed so much, went through so much and did some amazing things in their careers at CSU. Disappointed we didn’t send them out with a win tonight. We had an incredible turnout from our fans here. We are so thankful for our fans being here and the way they have behaved down here in Tucson. We are very grateful for that. Disappointed with how we played tonight. It wasn’t typical of how we played this year, especially how we took care of the football.”

Jay Norvell on whether the break between games slowed CSU down

“That is a difficult question to answer. I thought we were prepared for this game. We fumbled with the football and turned it over. You can’t do that and win. Things happened and they are what they are. You just have to overcome them. Guys get sick, guys, it happens, the bottom line is we have to focus and execute and that’s my responsibility and we didn’t do it tonight.”

Jay Norvell on analyzing the season overall

“It’s very difficult. We talked about this opportunity and how rare it was, and we didn’t take advantage of it. We need to find out why and get to the bottom of it. I am very disappointed with this. Upset, angry, all the above emotions you can have after a game like this. I have to take a step back and think about our seniors and really appreciate what they have done. We take a look at the game and the whole preparation and try to figure out why we did some of the things we did. We are responsible for this. It is what it is. I’m really proud of a lot of these guys in this locker room. There are a lot of disappointed seniors in there.”

Jay Norvell on turnovers throughout the season compared to the Arizona Bowl

“We did a lot of the same things we’ve done all year, we just turned the ball over tonight. We called a screen pass early, which is a very safe play, and we put it in the hands of a guy like Avery (Morrow) and he fumbles. We have to do a better job with the interception that Brayden (Fowler-Nicolosi) had. There are many things we could have done better. We have to take responsibility for this. We have to live with that and try to do better. Very disappointing because I think these are plays we can make. Wasn’t typical of what we’ve done this year. That wasn’t an achievement that was indicative of what we could achieve this year. We have to do better. We’re going to get back to work and build on this and build a better football team in 1925.”

Jay Norvell on the defense in the second half compared to the first half

“I thought the defense was OK. We didn’t score enough points to make it a game. We gave up a few big plays in the second half. We also missed a big play in the kicking game. I have to watch the film. The bottom line is that we didn’t react offensively and didn’t score enough points to make it a game. I thought our defense held up and did a good job.”

Jay Norvell on what the offense needs to do to continue to improve

“There are a lot of things. We have to show more consistency. We have to develop playmakers. We need to develop playmakers in both the passing game and the running game. This is traditional for us. In my opinion we were young this year. We were still very young as receivers. We were inexperienced at tight end and need to play more consistently at those positions. Brayden also needs to be more consistent. It’s a combination of all of those things that will help us be more productive offensively. We’ll take a look at that. I’m going to spend some time this week looking at this. We’re really going to dive in and see how we can improve and get better. That’s something that definitely needs to get better in 1925.”

Jay Norvell wonders if he will change his offensive style

“For me, the offensive style has a lot to do with the players. Our style will reflect our players, just like in defense. I think we will be better in many positions next year. Let’s take a look at the style. We did what we felt we needed to do to win this year and we will evaluate and address that over the course of the offseason.”

Thoughts from Jay Norvell on the program and the state of college football

“I’m old enough to appreciate football. Every day I go to work I appreciate it. I just think that will be lost. The gratitude and the appreciation of being part of a team, of coaching college football and playing college football, and the appreciation for your scholarship and the things that this university gives you is what we have here at Colorado State want to highlight. It gets lost. We’re going to lose it and I don’t know what you guys are going to write about to be honest because the best thing about college football is these young kids and when they put each other on the line. That’s why people come to see it. It is difficult. It is becoming increasingly difficult to coach and match organizations with people who care, are respectful and value the opportunities presented to them. We are fighting like crazy to keep it that way. A lot of different things come into play and you try to manage it as best you can. These two guys (Morrow and Henry Blackburn) are the best examples of college football. They overcame obstacles, they led their teammates, they were leaders and I’m just so proud to have coached both of those guys. We have a lot of guys like that in the locker room. What we’re building here is an appreciation for going out, wearing the CSU jersey and representing this university. We will continue to do that.”
