What to know about the FDA’s Costco egg recall

What to know about the FDA’s Costco egg recall

In today’s health alert, the Food and Drug Administration has increased its alert level related to a recalled brand of eggs sold at Costco. The authority fears that eating the eggs can lead to death or serious illness.

The FDA has now issued a Class 1 Warning on the recalled eggs due to the risk of salmonella contamination and a reasonable possibility that it could lead to serious health problems. This is the agency’s highest risk level.

The warning applies to 24-count packages of organic, pasture-raised eggs sold under the Costco Kirkland Signature brand. Last month, Handsome Brook Farms in New York recalled about 260,000 eggs distributed to 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The eggs were sold as of November 22nd and have the UPC code 9661910680. The packages have an expiration date of January 5th, 2025.

The recall was initiated because the cartons accidentally contained eggs that were not intended for retail use.

Even though there is no warning here in Michigan, if you have family in any of the southern states where the eggs were sold, or if you are going to one of the locations over the New Year, make sure everyone is aware of the recall travel. The eggs can be returned to Costco for a full refund.

Are there any reports of salmonella poisoning from eating the eggs? And remind us: what is salmonella and what are the symptoms of infection?

Fortunately, there have been no reports of serious illness associated with egg recall. We hope it stays that way.

Salmonella is an organism that lives in the intestines of humans, animals and birds. It can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

Most people infected with salmonella experience fever, nausea, stomach cramps and diarrhea. These symptoms can occur anywhere from 6 hours to 6 days after ingesting the bacteria. Most people recover without treatment in 4 to 7 days. However, if symptoms do not improve after a few days, it is best to see a doctor.

You can prevent yourself from becoming infected with salmonella and spreading bacteria to others by washing your hands frequently, preparing your food safely, and avoiding raw or undercooked meat, poultry, and eggs.

We will keep you informed of any updates to this extremely serious egg recall alert.
