What’s this cute teaser for Happy Gilmore 2 all about?

Real question: Are there people out there thinking about this now? Happy Gilmore as a touching underdog story about a likeable person who overcomes his weaknesses? Or are we still watching the film mostly just to see Bob Barker finish off Adam Sandler, and that bizarrely cute teaser that Netflix released for the film’s sequel is tonally pretty darn weird?


Maybe we can blame it on Christmas, when the teaser was actually released (to promote the film’s upcoming release in 2025). But the meaningful music, the adoring fans, Sandler’s hockey player-turned-golfer saying, “We’re glad you’re back, Mr. Gilmore,” and, most of all, the shots of Julie Bowen and Sandler looking like if they came straight from a tear drama, that’s what we all believe someone The promotion for the film assumes that there are people who will be really annoyed by the return of angry ’90s kid Adam Sandler is not Billy Madison or the guy from Big daddy. The trailer tries to inject a little comedy by showing a confrontation between Happy and Christopher McDonald’s villainous gunman McGavin, but the fact that the confrontation takes place in a cemetery makes us fear that this will somehow turn into a tearful emotional connection between the two will develop former arch-enemies.

We really don’t know what to think about it. Have fun with Gilmore 2 is directed by Kyle Newacheck, who we usually trust when it comes to comedy – he’s the one who wrote it Workaholics being one of the main directors of What we do in the shadowsso its credits are certainly a lot better than the original’s Gilmore Helmer Dennis Dugan, whose other Sandler collaborations include I now declare you Chuck and Larry, Jack and Jilland both Adult Films. (Dugan will still appear in the sequel, reprising a role he had in the original.) Maybe this is just bizarre marketing appealing to the tender feelings of people who have formative memories of this 28-year-old sports comedy about you Man who…hits the golf ball like a hockey puck. Definitely strange.
